ABOUT US

Greenlight Pictures is a boutique production company, with bases in Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur. We have produced films selected for Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Rotterdam, Tokyo, and Busan, as well as for major platforms like Disney+, Amazon Prime and Netflix.Woman on Fire Looks for Water (2009) and The Tiger Factory (2010) premiered at the Venice and Cannes film festivals. Girl in the Water (2011), won Denmark’s Academy Award for best short film. In 2016, Greenlight Pictures co-produced Pigeon, which premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival.Aqerat (2017) won Best Director at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Barbarian Invasion (2021), won the Grand Jury Prize at the Shanghai International Film Festival.Stone Turtle (2022), won the Fipresci Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival. The Fox King (2025) premiered at The Toronto International Film Festival.

19-year-old Ping works in a pig farm and cleans dishes in a rundown restaurant but longs to go to Japan to work in a car parts company. She’s under the guardian of her aunt, Madame Tien, who shuffles her between her two jobs. Tien is also involved in a secret “baby factory” scheme, pairing young women with illegal migrant workers and then selling the babies for money. In need of funds to fulfill her dream, she decides to go through with her aunt’s scheme. Woman on Fire Looks for Water tells the story of a father and son, and their relationship
with the women in their lives. Ah Fei sells frogs from his motorbike, while his father, Ah Kan, is part of a dying breed of fishermen in an old coastal village. They share a quiet, but strong relationship. The film follows these two characters as one of them faces death, while the other is only becoming a man.

Ming Jin (MJ) Woo is a producer and director based in Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur. MJ's Monday Morning Glory (2005) screened at The Berlin International Film Festival. Elephant and the Sea (2007) won 15 awards in festivals like Torino, Rotterdam and Seoul, Woman on Fire Looks for Water (2007) premiered at The Venice International Film Festival, while Tiger Factory (2010) premiered at the Director's Fortnight in Cannes.Stone Turtle (2022) was in the Main Competition at the Locarno Film Festival and won the Fipresci Prize. His latest film, The Fox King. (2025), premiered at The Toronto International Film Festival in the Centerpiece program.As producer, MJ has spearheaded filmes such as Aqerat (We the Dead, 2017), which won the Best Director Prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and Barbarian Invasion (2021), which won the Special Jury Prize at the Shanghai International Film Festival.At Greenlight, he heads development, managing a slate of projects with co-producers across Japan, Taiwan, and the US.
